The only person to benefit from Boris Johnson being removed from office would be Vladimir Putin, the leader of the Scottish Conservatives has claimed.

Douglas Ross was speaking for the first time after withdrawing his call for the PM to quit over Downing Street parties.

Mr Ross said the row over the lockdown parties now seemed trivial in comparison to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

And he said now would be “totally the wrong time” to change leader.

He acknowledged that there would continue to be personal differences between himself and Mr Johnson, but said his position on the prime minister’s leadership during the Ukraine crisis was very similar to that of Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.

Scottish Tory leader withdraws call for PM to quit

Mr Ross said: “Now is not the time to try and replace a prime minister – now is the time for unity.

“The only person who would gain from the removal of a UK prime minister from office would be Vladimir Putin.”

Mr Ross warned that the Russian president would use any signs of division as a “wedge” to drive between the forces that are trying to stop him.

The Scottish Conservative leader had written to the 1922 Committee of backbench Tory MPs in January to express his lack of confidence in Mr Johnson and to call for a leadership contest.

Mr Ross described the prime minister’s position at the time as “untenable” after he admitted attending a Downing Street party during the Covid lockdown.

But he announced on Thursday that he had formally withdrawn his letter to the committee, with the party also confirming that Mr Johnson would appear in person at the Scottish Conservative conference next weekend.

Mr Ross said he “had confidence in the prime minister to deal with this situation at the moment”, and that “everything else seems trivial” in comparison to the horrific scenes from Ukraine.

He added: “That is why I think our focus should be on supporting and helping the people of Ukraine, not on personal differences we may have with each other here in the UK.”

Other parties were critical of Mr Ross for withdrawing his call for the PM to go, with Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar saying Mr Ross “should not be using the Ukraine crisis to go back on his principles” and Lib Dem MSP Willie Rennie saying the Tory leader had “the backbone of a jellyfish”.

SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford said it was “an utterly humiliating u-turn for Douglas Ross”.

But Mr Ross said he did not care about criticisms from other parties, and that the SNP had also been calling for unity just a few days ago.

He added: “They were standing up in the House of Commons saying we should work together, we should support the government because the threat is not here in the UK or between different political parties or the prime minister and the opposition.

“It is between the western world, Europe and allies across the globe and Russia – Vladimir Putin.

“That is the biggest threat at the moment, and that’s what our efforts should be united in trying to defeat.”

Scotland’s first minister and her Welsh counterpart have proposed that both countries become “super sponsors” to Ukranian refugees fleeing the war.

Nicola Sturgeon and Mark Drakeford have written to the UK government to confirm their commitment in contributing to its community sponsorship scheme.

But Scotland and Wales have offered to step further to support refugees by acting as super sponsors.

It is hoped this would allow Ukrainians to come to the two countries faster.

The idea would be to get them into temporary accommodation immediately and then work with local partners to provide longer-term places to stay, including with host individuals, and give them access to safeguarding and services.

Details of the UK government’s community sponsorship scheme are to be released on Monday. It is expected that Ukrainians will be able to apply to come to the UK if they have been matched with a sponsor who will provide accommodation.

‘No cap on refugee numbers’

In a joint letter to Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove, Ms Sturgeon and Mr Drakeford have emphasised that the government must provide more clarity on how the scheme will work.

The letter makes clear that no cap will be set by Scotland and Wales on the numbers of refugees they will welcome.

Scotland has made an immediate commitment to support 3,000 refugees in the initial wave, in line with the numbers that were resettled under the Syrian scheme. Wales would take 1,000.

The Scottish government said it would welcome “at least” a proportionate share of the total number who come to the UK.

The letter also says it is essential that all arrivals have access to public funds, including welfare benefits, and are exempted from the Habitual Residence Test for accessing these.

The first ministers also call for urgent clarity on funding arrangements to support local government and they have suggested a “per head” funding arrangement similar to the Syrian and Afghanistan schemes to support resettlement and integration costs.

Finally, the letter calls for all visa requirements for Ukrainian nationals to be waived.

‘Play our full part’

Nicola Sturgeon said: “I want Scotland to play our full part in welcoming Ukrainians seeking sanctuary from war. The UK response so far has been beset with bureaucracy and red tape, when what is needed is humanity and urgent refuge for as many as possible.

“We are still awaiting full details of the proposed community sponsorship scheme. If the UK government is still unwilling to waive visa requirements, it is essential that this scheme works efficiently and effectively and allows people to come to the UK as quickly as possible.

“However, I am very worried that if people have to be matched with an individual sponsor before even being allowed entry to the UK, it will prove slow and cumbersome.”

She said that super sponsorship would allow large numbers to come to the respective nations quickly and that she would be able to welcome Ukrainians to Scotland as soon as possible.

England name unchanged squad for first test against Pakistan

England Cricket Board (ECB) on Wednesday named an unchanged squad for the first match of the three-test series against Pakistan that begins on August 5 in Manchester.

England beat West Indies 2-1 in the first international test series since the COVID-19 pandemic suspended the sport in March, winning the third test by 269 runs on Tuesday.

After losing the first test in Southampton, England roared back into the series with all-rounder Ben Stokes shining in the second to level it at 1-1 before fast bowler Stuart Broad guided the home side to victory with 10 wickets in the third match.

James Bracey, Ben Foakes, Jack Leach and Dan Lawrence have been named in the reserves.

The test series against Pakistan will also be held behind closed doors in a bio-secure bubble, even though a limited number of fans will be allowed to attend county cricket matches with social distancing guidelines in place.

“Our 14-man squad is unchanged,” national selector Ed Smith said in a statement. “County cricket now restarts on Saturday, August 1. We want to have sufficient reserves inside the bio-secure test match bubble.

“But we may also want to give opportunities, where possible, for the reserves to play county cricket. As we seek the best balance here, England may make changes to the reserves during the three-match series against Pakistan.”

The second (August 13-17) and third test (August 21-25) will be held in Southampton.

Two Indian schoolgirls spot Earth-bound asteroid

AHMEDABAD: Two schoolgirls from Gujrat in India have discovered an Earth-bound asteroid while they were going through images from a University of Hawaii telescope.

The asteroid is presently near Mars and its orbit is expected to cross that of Earth in about one million years’ time, said SPACE India, a private institute where the two 14-year-old girls received training.

“I look forward to… when we will get a chance to name the asteroid,” said Vaidehi Vekariya, who added that she wants to become an astronaut when she is older.

The asteroid, currently called HLV2514, may be officially christened only after NASA confirms its orbit, a SPACE India spokeswoman said.

Radhika Lakhani, the other student, said she was working hard on her education. “I don’t even have a TV at home, so that I can concentrate on my studies.”

Asteroids and comets pose a potential threat to Earth, and scientists discover thousands of them each year. In 2013, an asteroid heavier than the Eiffel Tower exploded over central Russia, leaving more than 1,000 people injured from its shockwave.

The two girls, who hail from Surat, discovered the object as part of an asteroid search campaign conducted by SPACE India along with the International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC), a NASA-affiliated citizen scientist group.

IASC Director J Patrick Miller confirmed the discovery, according to an email from him to the girls seen by Reuters.

The girls used specialised software to analyse the images snapped by the Pan-STARRS telescope in Hawaii, and made the discovery in June, SPACE India said.

The institute is among the few private space education initiatives in India, a country known for championing low-cost space technology that has spurred missions to the moon and Mars.

इस वक़्त दुनिया एक दुर्लभ खगोलीय घटना की गवाह बन रही है. दुनियाभर के स्टारगेजर्स एक शानदार धूमकेतु को देख रहे हैं.

धूमकेतु नियोवाइस को सबसे पहले मार्च के आख़िर में देखा गया था और ये 21वीं सदी के उन चंद धूमकेतु में से एक बन गया है ,जिन्हें सूरज की ओर बढ़ते समय नंगी आंखों देखा जा सकता है.

ये धूमकेतु 23 जुलाई को धरती के सबसे नज़दीक होगा, लेकिन फिर भी ये क़रीब 103 मीलियन किलोमीटर दूर होगा.

नीचे कुछ ऐसी जगहों का ज़िक्र है, जहां के लोग इस अनोखी खगोलीय घटना के साझी बन चुके हैं. यानी उनके यहां ये धूमकेतु देखा जा चुका है.

ये तस्वीर ब्रिटेन के सॉल्टबर्न पियर में रात के समय ली गई थी.

धूमकेतु सूर्योदय से पहले और सूर्यास्त के बाद उत्तरी गोलार्ध के मिड-लेटिट्यूड में दिखाई देता है – यानी यूरोप, अमरीका और कनाडा में.

ज़िंदगी में एक बार देखी जाने वाली खगोलीय घटना

ब्रिटेन के अलावा कई दूसरे देशों के लोगों ने इस धूमकेतु को देखने का आनंद उठाया.

ये तस्वीर तब खींची गई जब नियोवाइस रूस की एक चर्च के ऊपर चमक रहा था.

ये बेहद दुर्लभ खगोलीय घटना इसलिए भी है, क्योंकि इसके बाद ये धूमकेतु अगले 6,800 साल तक दोबारा धरती से नहीं गुज़रेगा. इसलिए इस ग्रह पर रहने वाले लोगों के लिए ये जीवन में एक बार देखी जाने वाली अनोखी घटना है.

आसानी से देखा जा सकता है

ये तस्वीर तब ली गई जब धुमकेतू इटली स्थित इस चर्च के ऊपर था.

तस्वीरों में धूमकेतु नियोवाइस एक धारी की तरह दिखाई देता है. लेकिन अगर आप इस तस्वीर को देखेंगे तो ये ठहरा हुआ सा नज़र आएगा, क्योंकि वो अंतरिक्ष में यहां से दूर निकल चुका है.

23 जुलाई को, धूमकेतु चंद्रमा से 400 गुना अधिक दूरी पर होगा.

लेकिन फिर भी आपको इसे देखने के लिए दूरबीन या टेलिस्कोप की ज़रूरत नहीं होगी, हालांकि और साफ देखने के लिए आप इनका इस्तेमाल कर भी सकते हैं.

धूमकेतु नियोवाइस को 12 जुलाई को तुर्की के वान में देखा गया.

मार्च में खोजा गया

धूमकेतु नियोवाइस को नासा की सैटेलाइट नियोवाइस ने मार्च के अंत में खोजा था.

हाल में ये सूरज के काफी नज़दीक पहुंच गया था, लेकिन फिर भी बच गया. और अब ये बाहरी सौर मंडल की ओर वापस जा रहा है.

ऊपर की तस्वीर में इसे स्पेन के बार्सिलोना में देखा जा सकता है.

एक झलक देखने के लिए सबसे अच्छा समय

9 जुलाई को चीन में हेइलोंगजियांग प्रांत के हार्बिन शहर में इसे देखा गया.

दुनिया भर में लोग इस अविश्वसनीय घटना का आनंद ले रहे हैं. ये तस्वीर चीन में हेइलोंगजियांग प्रांत के हार्बिन शहर में ली गई.

जुलाई के दौरान, धूमकेतु पश्चिम की ओर आसमान में चला जाएगा.

महीने के मध्य से इसे पूरी रात देखा जा सकेगा. लेकिन इसे हमेशा उत्तरी दिशा में नीचे की ओर देखा जा सकेगा.

फिर ये गायब हो जाएगा, क्योंकि ये सौर मंडल में बहुत अंदर यात्रा करता है.

आउटर स्पेस से नज़ारा

धूमकेतु की इस चमक को पांच जुलाई को अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्पेस स्टेशन के पूर्वी क्षितिज से तस्वीर में कैद किया गया था.

समझा जा रहा है कि धूमकेतु अंतरिक्ष में घूम रहा है, इसलिए आप उसे धरती के ऊपर से और साथ में ग्रह की सतह से भी देख सकते हैं.

ये तस्वीर अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्पेस स्टेशन से ली गई थी.

कॉस्मोनॉट्स इवान वैगनर ने धूमकेतु नियोवाइस को वर्णित करते हुए कहा था कि “ये पिछले सात साल में दिखा सबसे चमकीला धूमकेतु है. इसकी पूंछ स्पेस स्टेशन से एकदम साफ दिख रही थी.”

कोरोना वैक्सीन: ऑक्सफोर्ड यूनिवर्सिटी की कामयाबी से क्या बदलेगा

कोरोना वायरस की वैक्सीन विकसित करने में ब्रिटेन की ऑक्सफ़ोर्ड यूनिवर्सिटी को बड़ी कामयाबी मिली है. यूनिवर्सिटी द्वारा विकसित एक कोरोना वायरस वैक्सीन को इंसानों के लिए सुरक्षित पाया गया है.

यूनिवर्सिटी ने ह्यूमन ट्रायल के दौरान यह पाया कि इस वैक्सीन से लोगों में कोरोना वायरस से लड़ने की इम्युनिटी यानी वायरस से लड़ने की प्रतिरोधक क्षमता विकसित हुई.

कोविड-19 महामारी के ख़िलाफ़ दुनिया भर में चल रहे वैक्सीन निर्माण के कार्य में इसे बड़ी उपलब्धि कहना ग़लत नहीं होगा.

यूनिवर्सिटी के अनुसार, इस टीके के ट्रायल में 1077 लोगों को शामिल किया गया था.

ह्यूमन ट्रायल के दौरान जिन लोगों को यह टीका लगाया गया था, उनके शरीर में कोरोना वायरस से लड़ने वाले व्हाइट ब्लड सेल और एंडीबॉडी विकसित होने के सबूत मिले हैं.

हालांकि, ये कहना थोड़ी जल्दबाज़ी होगी कि यह संक्रमण को पूरी तरह रोक सकते हैं.

ऑक्सफ़ोर्स यूनिवर्सिटी के विज्ञानी इन नतीजों से ख़ुश हैं. उनका कहना है कि वो इस सफ़लता के बाद बड़े स्तर का ह्यूमन ट्रायल करके वैक्सीन के सफल होने की पुष्टि करने वाले हैं.

यूके की सरकार ने पहले ही इस वैक्सीन की 100 मिलियन यानी 10 करोड़ डोज़ ऑर्डर कर दी हैं.

यह वैक्सीन कैसे काम करता है

इस वैक्सीन को ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 कहा जा रहा है. यह काफ़ी तेज़ी से विकसित किया गया है.

इस वैक्सीन को जेनेटिकली इंजीनियर्ड वायरस की मदद से तैयार किया गया है, इस वायरस के चलते चिंम्पांजी को सामान्य कोल्ड होता है.

इस वायरस को काफ़ी ज़्यादा मोडिफाइड किया गया है ताकि इससे लोगों में संक्रमण नहीं हो और यह काफ़ी हद तक कोरोना वायरस जैसा लगने लगा.

यह वैक्सीन देखने में कोरोना वायरस जैसा ही लगता है और इसके बाद इम्यून सिस्टम इस पर हमला करना सीख सकता है.

एंटी बॉडीज और टी कोशिकाएं क्या हैं

कोरोना वायरस को लेकर अब तक ज्यादा ध्यान एंटी बॉडी तैयार करने पर दिया गया है, लेकिन यह हमारी इम्यून सिस्टम का एक ही हिस्सा है.

एंटी बॉडीज हमारे इम्यून सिस्टम द्वारा तैयार छोटे छोटे प्रोटीन होते हैं जो वायरस की सतह पर चिपक जाते हैं.

यह वैक्सीन पूरी तरह सुरक्षित है. लेकिन इसके साइड इफेक्ट्स भी हैं.

हालांकि कोई भी साइड इफेक्ट्स बहुत नुकसानदायक नहीं है. लेकिन वैक्सीन लेने वाले 70 प्रतिशत लोगों में बुख़ार और सिरदर्द की शिकायत देखी गई है.

शोधकर्ताओं का कहना है कि इन समस्याओं को पैरासिटामोल से दूर किया जा सकता है.

ऑक्सफ़ोर्ड यूनिवर्सिटी के प्रोफेसर सारा गिलबर्ट का कहना है, “यह वैक्सीन कोविड-19 के लिए कारगर है, इसकी पुष्टि करने से पहले काफ़ी कुछ करना बाक़ी है. लेकिन इस वैक्सीन के शुरुआती परिणाम काफी उत्साहवर्धक हैं.”

PM Imran announces August 9 as Tiger Force Day

Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Tuesday that August 9 will be celebrated as the Tiger Force Day, announcing a massive plantation drive across the country to combat adverse effects of climate change.

In a broadcast message today, the prime minister said that he will personally become a part of the plantation drive.

“We will have to plant 10 billion trees until 2023,” said the premier, adding that today he is sending a special message to the Tiger Force.

Calling pollution and global warming the impetus behind the plantation drive, the premier said that the volunteer force will make a record by planting the maximum number of trees.

PM Imran said that due to pollution, the health of the general public is deteriorating and it was high time to initiate a response to the problem.

In his message, PM Imran urged Pakistanis to participate in the plantation drive on August 9, adding that officials will also participate in the initiative.

Earlier in April, Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced the launch of the youth force, saying it will lead the fight against the coronavirus in Pakistan.

US House panel reschedules Big Tech CEO hearing for Wednesday

All four tech company CEOs – Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Tim Cook of Apple, Sundar Pichai of Alphabet and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook – are to appear virtually, the announcement said.

A congressional hearing on digital marketplace competition featuring the chief executives of four of the largest American tech companies has been rescheduled for Wednesday, a House subcommittee said on Saturday.

The CEOs of Facebook, Amazon.com, Alphabet’s Google and Apple were to have testified on Monday before the House Antitrust Subcommittee. But the hearing was postponed for the lying in state at the Capitol Building of the late Representative John Lewis, an icon of the civil rights movement.

A subcommittee announcement issued on Saturday said the session now would be held on Wednesday and that witnesses and members could appear in person or virtually.

All four tech company CEOs – Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Tim Cook of Apple, Sundar Pichai of Alphabet and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook – are to appear virtually, the announcement said.

The subcommittee of the Democratic-led House Judiciary Committee is investigating whether the companies actively seek to harm and eliminate smaller rivals.

“Given the central role these corporations play in the lives of the American people, it is critical that their CEOs are forthcoming,” Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler and David Cecilline, the subcommittee chairman, said in a joint statement.

The CEOs are expected to deflect criticism of their use of market power to damage rivals by saying they themselves face competition and by debunking claims that they are so dominant.
